Ear Infections and Ear Pain Treatment in Houston Heights

Ear pain can be sharp, throbbing, or a dull ache that won’t go away. It can make it difficult to concentrate, sleep, or go about your daily life. While ear infections are often thought of as a childhood problem, adults experience them too, along with other conditions that cause ear discomfort. At Houston Injury and Wellness Clinic, we provide prompt evaluation and treatment for ear pain in patients throughout Houston Heights and the greater Houston area.

What Causes Ear Pain?

Ear pain has many potential causes, some originating in the ear itself and others referred from nearby structures. Understanding the source of your pain is the first step toward effective treatment.

Ear Infections

Ear infections are among the most common causes of ear pain. There are two main types.

Middle ear infections, called otitis media, occur when fluid builds up behind the eardrum and becomes infected. They often develop after a cold, flu, or upper respiratory infection when congestion prevents the Eustachian tube from draining properly. Symptoms include ear pain, a feeling of fullness in the ear, muffled hearing, and sometimes fever.

Outer ear infections, known as otitis externa or swimmer’s ear, affect the ear canal. They often result from water remaining in the ear after swimming or bathing, creating a moist environment where bacteria can thrive. Symptoms include pain that worsens when you touch or tug on the outer ear, itching, redness, and sometimes discharge.

Other Causes of Ear Pain

Not all ear pain comes from an infection. Other common causes include earwax buildup that creates pressure or blocks the ear canal, sinus infections or congestion that cause referred pain, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders affecting the jaw, dental problems including tooth infections or grinding, sore throat or tonsillitis, allergies causing Eustachian tube dysfunction, changes in air pressure during flights or altitude changes, and foreign objects lodged in the ear canal.

Because ear pain can stem from various sources, proper evaluation is important for getting the right treatment.

Symptoms to Watch For

Ear pain may occur on its own or alongside other symptoms that provide clues about the underlying cause. Symptoms that often accompany ear infections or other ear problems include muffled or decreased hearing, a feeling of fullness or pressure in the ear, drainage from the ear, ringing or buzzing sounds, dizziness or balance problems, fever, sore throat or nasal congestion, and jaw pain or difficulty chewing.

Pay attention to how your symptoms develop and any factors that make them better or worse. This information helps your provider make an accurate diagnosis.

When to See a Doctor

While mild ear discomfort sometimes resolves on its own, you should see a doctor if ear pain is severe or worsening, symptoms last more than a day or two, you notice fluid or discharge draining from your ear, pain is accompanied by fever, you experience hearing loss or dizziness, you have recurring ear infections, or ear pain follows a recent cold, sinus infection, or respiratory illness.

Prompt treatment for ear infections helps relieve pain faster and prevents potential complications like hearing loss or spread of infection.

How We Diagnose Ear Problems

At Houston Injury and Wellness Clinic, we take a thorough approach to evaluating ear pain. Your provider will ask about your symptoms, medical history, and any recent illnesses or activities that might be relevant.

Using an otoscope, we’ll examine your ear canal and eardrum to look for signs of infection, fluid buildup, wax blockage, or other abnormalities. We may also examine your nose, throat, sinuses, and jaw to identify referred pain from other sources.

Based on this evaluation, we can usually determine the cause of your ear pain and recommend appropriate treatment.

Treatment Options

Treatment depends on what’s causing your ear pain.

Middle Ear Infection Treatment

Many middle ear infections, particularly those caused by viruses, resolve on their own within a few days. We may recommend watchful waiting with pain management using over-the-counter pain relievers and warm compresses.

If symptoms are severe, don’t improve within a few days, or indicate a bacterial infection, antibiotics may be prescribed. We’ll discuss the best approach based on your specific situation.

Outer Ear Infection Treatment

Swimmer’s ear typically requires prescription ear drops that contain antibiotics and sometimes steroids to reduce inflammation. Keeping the ear dry during treatment is essential for healing. We’ll provide instructions on how to properly administer ear drops and protect your ear while it recovers.

Other Treatments

For ear pain caused by wax buildup, we can safely remove the blockage. If your pain stems from sinus congestion, allergies, or Eustachian tube dysfunction, we’ll treat the underlying cause to relieve your symptoms. Ear pain related to TMJ or dental issues may require referral to the appropriate specialist.

Preventing Ear Problems

Some ear problems can be prevented with simple precautions. Keep ears dry after swimming or bathing by tilting your head and using a towel. Avoid inserting cotton swabs or other objects into your ear canal. Treat colds and allergies promptly to prevent congestion from affecting your ears. If you’re prone to swimmer’s ear, consider using drying drops after water exposure.
