Acute Illness and Sick Visits in Houston Heights
What Is an Acute Illness?
Common acute illnesses include respiratory infections like colds and flu, sore throats, sinus infections, ear infections, urinary tract infections, stomach bugs, skin infections, and many others. While these conditions are often minor, they can make you feel miserable and interfere with your ability to work, care for your family, or go about your daily routine.
Why Same-Day Sick Visits Matter
Unfortunately, many primary care offices are booked out for weeks, leaving sick patients with limited options. Some wait it out at home hoping to improve, while others resort to crowded emergency rooms or impersonal urgent care chains where they see a different provider every time.
At Houston Injury and Wellness Clinic, we reserve appointments specifically for sick visits so you can be seen the same day you call. You’ll receive care from a team that can also support your long-term health needs, not just address the immediate problem.
Conditions We Treat During Sick Visits
If your symptoms suggest something more serious or require specialized care, we’ll guide you to the appropriate level of treatment and coordinate any necessary referrals.
What to Expect During Your Visit
Your visit begins with a discussion of your symptoms—when they started, how they’ve progressed, and anything that makes them better or worse. We’ll ask about your medical history and any medications you’re currently taking.
Next, your provider will perform a physical examination tailored to your symptoms. This might include checking your throat, ears, and sinuses, listening to your lungs, examining your skin, or pressing on your abdomen depending on what’s bothering you.
If needed, we can perform diagnostic tests on-site. This includes rapid strep tests, flu and COVID-19 testing, urinalysis, and other evaluations to pinpoint the cause of your illness. Having these tests available in our office means faster answers without an extra trip to a lab.
Based on your evaluation, your provider will explain your diagnosis and discuss treatment options. If medication is needed, prescriptions can be sent directly to your pharmacy. You’ll also receive guidance on home care, what symptoms to watch for, and when to follow up.
When to Seek Emergency Care
If you’re unsure whether your symptoms are an emergency, call our office and we can help you determine the best course of action.
Convenient Care When You Need It
We also offer telemedicine visits for certain conditions, allowing you to see a provider from the comfort of home when that’s the better option.
